Part of a group of negatives taken for September 28, 1958, Arkansas Gazette article "Caravan Had Royal Welcome in State," 5F:1. People celebrating the Overland Mail Centennial caravan, which commemorates John Butterfield and his Overland Mail Company from the 1860s. Butterfield traveled from Missouri to San Francisco, California, with his Concord Coach to haul passengers and mail. Postmaster Leslie C. Neal (right) of Cedarville, Crawford County, Arkansas, has his beard checked by the caravan chaplain, Reverend V.H. Brown of Tulsa, Oklahoma (1957.4). Sallie Spinks, postmaster of Evansville, Washington County, Arkansas, hands mail to William D. Correl, postmaster of Highway Postmaster Number 1 (1957.5). Mrs. Donald Parks of Prairie Grove fires an anvil in old-time fashion during caravan's stop at Prairie Grove Battlefield in Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas (1957.7).
